Abstract

442,953. Speed governors. LEIBING AUTOMOTIVE DEVICES, Inc., 224, Natoma Street, San Francisco, U.S.A. Sept. 14, 1934, No. 26480. Convention date, Aug. 2. [Class 57] [See also Groups XXIX and XXXII] Apparatus for controlling the flow of fluid in a conduit comprises a plate 21 arranged eccentrically in the conduit and two plates 28, 29 arranged at an angle to each other, preferably 15‹, and pivoted to the conduit in the same plane as the plate 21. In the open position the plate 29 engages an abutment 81. The plate 28 is curved to assist in the action of the flow of the fluid to close the valve, which closing action is resisted by the plate 29. An inertia member 47 is secured to the valve spindle and is loaded by an adjustable spring 53 and the loading is increased by the spring 72 when the valve 28, 29 nears its closed position, to prevent fluttering. The abutments 521, 54 of the spring 53 are provided with helical grooves of greater pitch than the spring when it is fully extended and the spring is wound on. The engaging side 76 of the groove being normal to the axis of the spring to provide a suitable recess. A plunger 103 is positioned to engage an abutment 105 and the pressure in the conduit is transferred by ports 106, 107, 108 to a cylinder 99 containing a piston 101 engaging the plunger 103. Atmosphere is admitted to the cylinder 99 through the filter 111 and port 109. Excessive vacuum in the conduit results in the piston 101 and plunger 103 moving against the spring 112 to close the valve. The apparatus may be employed in the induction pipe to govern the maximum speed of an internal-combustion engine.
