Abstract

442,667. Ornithopter. HAENLE, K., 99, Finkenkrugerweg, Staaken, Berlin. May 28, 1934, No. 15806. [Class 4] The wings of an ornithopter comprise several stiff and indeformable winglets rotatable over the wing span by means of bearings disposed between the leading edge of the winglets and the centre of pressure, springs being disposed between the winglets and the spar in such manner that alteration of the angle of incidence between the winglets and the spar alters the tension of the springs. As shown in Fig. 6, the machine comprises a fixed wing W and flapping wings F<1>, F<2>, adapted to oscillate about axes A, Fig. 2. Wings F<1>, F<2> comprise spars H and rigid wing- lets f connected thereto by bearings and by springs K, Fig. 3. Means are provided for altering the tension of the springs K in each wing either in the same sense to provide elevator control or in opposite senses to give lateral control. These means comprise a screw spindle X, Fig. 9, carried by the fore- and-aft bearing of each flapping wing and having a recess at its inner end engaged by pins affixed to a lever P secured to the spar. Rotation of screw X thus causes rotation of the spar about its longitudinal axis.
