Abstract
442,375. Fusible cut-outs. CRABTREE, J. A., Endwood, Little Aston Park, Sutton Coldfield. Aug. 3, 1934, No. 22622. [Class 38 (i)] A fuse element consists of a sheath of a metal which does not deteriorate in conductivity due to oxidation by heating in air and a core of a metal having a boiling point substantially less than the melting point of the sheath metal or of an alloy of which one of the constituents has such a boiling point. Preferably also the core or one of its constituents has an atomic weight higher than that of the sheath. Suitable materials are silver for the sheath and cadmium or a cadmium-tin alloy for the core. The time of fusing may be controlled by forming the element with an irregular sectional area or by applying local coverings at one or more points. The element may be enclosed in a ceramic container packed with sand and may be provided with an indicator dependent upon the subsequent fusing of a higher-resistance wire connected in parallel. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of zinc in combination with silver, to the use of silver alloys, and to alternative arrangements in which the materials are arranged in the form of laminµ or as combinations of separate conductors arranged in series or parallel. Specifications 439,432 and 439,517 are referred to.
