Abstract

441,722. Partitions ; metal plates. HARRIS & SHELDON, Ltd., 31, Stafford Street, Birmingham, SANKEY & SONS, Ltd., J., Albert Street, Bilston, Staffordshire, and BUTLER, H. G., 46, Cannon Street, London: Oct. 17, 1934, No. 29675. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] Relates to a partition comprising a number of separate panels or frames 1 set one above another and secured to pillars or stanchions 3, as shown in Fig. 1, and to means for closing the space between the panels or frames and the ceiling 12, or between a pillar or stanchion and a wall. According to the invention, the closing means consists of an adjustable filler member comprising two overlapping plates slidably guided one upon the other so as to be capable of being extended or moved over one another according to the depth or width of the space to be filled, means being provided for locking the plates together in their adjusted positions and for securing them to a pillar or stanchion. The panels 1 may be of glass or metal and have a peripheral channel frame 2. A filler member for insertion between each top panel 1 and the ceiling 12 is of a width to fit between adjacent pillars 3 and comprises upper and lower overlapping rectangular plates 4, 5. The lower plate 5 has a horizontal stepped flange and is provided with a welded angle 7 so as to form a horizontal channel 8 adapted to fit over the top channel 9 of the frame 2 of the adjacent top panel 1 as shown in Fig. 2. Vertical channels 11 are welded to the flanged edges 10 of the lower plate 5, as shown in Fig. 5, and the top plate 4 has hooked side edges 13 for slidably engaging such channels 11. In fitting such a filler member, the channels 11 are cut to the desired length and the upper plate 4 is adjusted on the plate 5 to the correct position, the overlapping plates being then secured together by bolts 14, Fig. 2. The upper edge of the top plate 4 is provided with an integral channel 15 adapted to engage the ceiling, as shown in Fig. 2. The side channels 11 of the filler member seat against the pillars 3 and are secured thereto by straps 16, Fig. 6, which are applied to both faces of the pillars and overlap the channels 11, bolts 17 being passed through the straps and channels. For closing the space between a wall and an adjacent pillar 3, a filler comprises two overlapping plates 4, 5 which engage by means of the hook-shaped edges 13 of the plate 4 sliding on the channels 11 of the plate 5, as shown in Fig. 8. In the adjusted position, the two plates are secured together by bolts 14. A channel 8 on the outer edge of the plate 5 is adapted to engage the pillar 3, as shown in Fig. 7, and is secured thereto by straps. The opposite vertical edge of the plate 4 is provided with a channel 15 to engage the wall or a pillar thereon. This filler member may be in two superimposed and connected parts.
