[Class 16] In a book or pad of the kind from which a certain proportion of the leaves, generally alternate leaves, can be torn out, these leaves are detachably held by adhesive at a restricted part or parts of their edges, and the rest of the leaves are non-detachably held at their back edges. The permanent leaves 1, Fig. 1, are wider than the detachable leaves 2, and three slots 3 are cut across the back 5 of the pad so that all the leaves and the two side covers 4 are notched. Adhesive is then applied to back 5 so that the leaves 1 are held together along the whole length of the back, and the detachable leaves 2 are only held by the adhesive which enters the slots 3. Linen 6 and a binding strip 7 are then applied. In another form, the detachable leaves, as in the previous form, do not extend to the back, and the permanent leaves are provided with a number of shallow recesses deep enough to reveal parts of the backs of the detachable leaves. Adhesive is applied to the back of the pad, as before. In a third form, the permanent and detachable leaves are the same size, but parts of the latter are cut away at the back, for example near the corners, so that these leaves only receive adhesive along restricted lengths of their rear edges. In this embodiment the cut-away parts can be produced in large sheets, corresponding in size to four detachable leaves, by punching slots therein. These large sheets can then be assembled with large sheets for forming the permanent leaves, and severed simultaneously to form blocks ready for binding. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the detachable leaves 2 are not notched, and are not as wide as the permanent leaves 1, the latter being gummed together at the rear of the pad, whilst the former are gummed together along a part 9 of the top edge of the pad; the part 9 may be on any edge of the pad other than the back edge. The Provisional Specification describes also a pad comprising leaves all of the same size, but wherein, except for restricted parts, the rear edges of the detachable leaves have been treated with a greasy substance, such as French chalk, which resists the adhesive subsequently applied to the rear edges of the assembled leaves.
