Abstract
Wool-like artificial fibres are manufactured by carrying out the desulphurization of viscose material, and the after-treatment with organic liquids capable of dissolving water according to Specification 424,229 by a treatment with the said organic liquids capable of dissolving water in the presence of a volatile base which boils below 100 DEG C. Advantageously the material is treated in a plurality of baths of increasing strength as regards the said organic liquids, and small quantities of volatile base, for instance ammonia, are added to the first bath of lowest strength. In an example a suitable viscose material is washed with water and squeezed to remove excess liquid. It is then treated with a bath containing 35 per cent of ethyl alcohol and 1 to 10 per cent of ammonia, and subsequently with further baths containing more alcohol but no ammonia. After the last bath consisting, e.g. of alcohol of 92 per cent strength, the adherent solvent is removed by squeezing or centrifuging and the residual alcohol recovered in known manner. The baths may be connected by overflow apparatus, the alcohol running through the baths in countercurrent to the fibrous material, and ammonia being added to the last bath.
