Abstract
273,280. Bernard, J. M. June 24, 1927. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 25, 1927]. Cellulose xanthates.-Cellulose is treated with excess of carbon disulphide in a closed vessel, the excess of carbon disulphide is removed and recovered by means of a vacuum, and caustic soda solution is then added, the vacuum preferably being re-imposed to recover remaining carbon disulphide. The cellulose, which may be in the form of pieces of wood-pulp sheet or in other form such as cotton, is placed in a churning apparatus and excess of carbon disulphide is added, either as liquid, vapour, or both. When the cellulose is saturated, the excess of carbon disulphide is removed by drawing it off at the bottom and by applying a vacuum for a few moments. Caustic soda solution is then added in some excess, and the apparatus is rotated more slowly until the xanthate is formed. A vacuum may be applied during the whole or a part of this stage of the process. The product is placed in a mixer with the necessary quantity of water, with or without soda, to give a desired percentage of cellulose and viscosity. Alternatively a single mixing apparatus may be employed for the whole process, the speed of rotation being varied at the several stages of the process; or the saturation of the cellulose with carbon disulphide may be effected in the churning apparatus, the product being then transferred, as a whole or in portions, to the mixer containing the soda solution. The cellulose employed may have been subjected to a preliminary mercerizing treatment with caustic soda, followed by washing. The viscose produced is suitable for making films and filaments.
