Abstract

Alcohols containing more than four carbon atoms are obtained by hydrogenation of the corresponding saturated or unsaturated aliphatic acids or their esters, using the usual catalysts with an activating addition of not more than 10 per cent of iron. A suitable catalyst is a copper-chromium ore containing 3 per cent of iron oxide. Temperatures of 250--300 DEG C. and pressures of 200--300 atmospheres are suitable.ALSO:The production of alcohols by the catalytic hydrogenation of saturated or unsaturated aliphatic acids having more than four carbon atoms is effected by means of the usual catalysts with an addition of not more than 10 per cent of iron. According to a typical example, the cetyl ester of palmitic acid is hydrogenated at 300 DEG C., and 200 atmospheres, using a copper-chromium catalyst activated with 3 per cent of iron oxide. Other heavy metals and their oxides, particularly nickel, uranium, cobalt, zinc, cadmium, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium may also be used as catalyst.
