Abstract
440,211. Gates. CHAUDOIR, E., 14, Bloomfield Road, Highgate, London. June 25, 1934, No. 18692. [Class 45] A collapsable sliding gate, door, or grille comprises alternate main and secondary pickets 1, 4 guided by tracks at top and bottom and connected by link members B, C, D, or by hinged metal slats 25, Fig. 20 in the case of a solid gate, and the tracks for the secondary pickets are provided with fixed cams 22, 23 which move these pickets out of the plane of the gate so as to reduce the width required for the gate when collapsed (see Fig. 3). As shown in Fig. 1, the main pickets are in two lengths 1, 1<a> secured between the upper, middle, and lower links B, C, D, and the secondary pickets 4 are free to turn in the links and are connected to an adjacent main picket by two-part clamps 7 (Fig. 5) which grip the pickets 4 and provide bearings 7b for the pickets 1. Some of the pickets 1 are carried by hangers 9, from a rail 11 and are connected with the hangers by a swivel joint, The remainder of the pickets 1 are connected by swivel joints with guide-members 12<a> which engage the underside of the rail 11. The lower ends of the main pickets 1 are guided in a channel track 13, some of the pickets having enlarged ends 5<a>, Fig. 6, and the remainder being fitted with flanged rollers 14 which rest on the edges of the track and carry part of the weight. The upper end of each secondary picket 4 is fitted with a horizontal arm 15 carrying a roller moving between guides, and the lower end is fitted with an arm which engages in a guide track 21 adjacent to the track 13. The rail 11 and track 13 extend around the side of the gateway 17, see Fig. 3, but when the gate is opened, the cams 22, 23 engage the arms at the upper and lower ends of the pickets 4, and deflect the pickets 4 out of plane of the gate, so that as the pickets pass beyond the gateway and round the bend of the track they are closed up as shown. In a modification, Figs. 16-18 (not shown), each link is a two-part clamp as in Fig. 5. As shown in Fig. 19, intermediate bars 24 are provided between the main and secondary pickets 1, 4. The secondary pickets may be shorter at the lower end than the main pickets, and may then be guided at the lower end in the channel track 13 which is made lower at one side to permit them to move out. U.S.A. Specification 1,945,729 is referred to.
