440,074. Thrust bearings; heating. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and OLIVER, C. S., Park Side, Coventry. March 1, 1935, No. 6486. [Class 12 (i)] In a thrust bearing comprising a thrust block acting against spaced transverse faces fast on the rotary member, the axial separation of the faces due to heating of the rotary member when running is balanced by heating the thrust block, so as to maintain efficient working. The thrust block 17 mounted in the divided housing 16 contacts collars 10, 11 keyed to the shaft 15, the coacting faces of the block and collars being provided with oppositely inclined lubricant grooves 22, 23. Lubricant supplied through a duct 27 and radial passage 28 in the shaft to a space 20 passes through the grooves 22, 23 and enters, through ports 25, the chamber 21 in the thrust block, on outlet 26 being provided. The lubricant becomes heated during its passage over the working faces and raises the temperature of the thrust block by the desired amount. Separate means of heating the thrust block may however be employed.
