Abstract

<PICT:0440054/III/1> Apparatus for the production of nitrogen or mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen by the partial combustion of ammonia comprises a burner situated in a combustion chamber c, the burner consisting of two concentric pipes, the outer pipe being closed at one end and broken at a point in the combustion chamber. The inner pipe g, is surrounded by a heat deflecting plate f, preferably of conical form, at that point, to form slot-like openings at the ends of the sections e and h of the outer pipe. Oxygen or air is led in through the section e of the outer pipe, and ammonia through the inner pipe g, reversing its flow through the section h of the outer pipe. The two gases meet at the edge of the deflecting plate f with the formation of a flame.
