Abstract

Cr<\>zeped or crinkled artificial yarns are produced during the winding of the thread by rapidly alternating extensions and shortenings of the winding stretch, i.e. the distance between the moved winding-on device and the nearest thread guide member. This effect is produced particularly simply in the centrifugal spinning process by disposing the thread guide funnel eccentrically in the spinning can, preferably closer to the axis of the can than to the can wall. Thus with a can 150 mm. in diameter the funnel is advantageously 20 mm. from the axis of the can. To obtain a more uniform crinkling, the funnel is moved during the winding process nearer to the axial line of the can, e.g. at a rate proportional to the growth of thickness of the winding. Thus, the distance of 20 mm. from the axis of the can may be reduced to 15 mm. during the course of a winding. The absolute diameter of the can is also found to affect the nature of the crimping, the crimps being larger and less numerous the greater the diameter of the can. The composition and ripening of the viscose spinning solution and the composition of the coagulating bath are preferably adjusted to ensure that the threads are fed to the can in as plastic a state as possible. The crimped thread may be treated in an acid fixing bath, containing, e.g. 5,7 per cent H2SO4 before further after-treatment. After washing, the thread preferably has an intermediate drying treatment before further after-treatment. When using spool, cylinder, reel or similar winding-devices, the variations to the winding stretch are produced by oscillation of the thread guide.
