Abstract

In a process for the production of artificial silk by the wet spinning process, the silk is wound while still wet, to form a substantially cylindrical package having flat ends, by feeding the thread to a bobbin of wood or synthetic material driven by means of a friction roll having a continuous helical thread guide groove formed therein, the bobbin being provided with a substantially cylindrical core comprising at least two parts capable of being p detached from one another and removed from the wound bobbin, the core then removed from the wound bobbin and the package subjected to treatment with liquids, e.g. washing under pressure to <PICT:0485933/IV/1> <PICT:0485933/IV/2> remove salt and acid, desulphurization, bleaching or brightening. The thread is preferably wound under slight tension and may have the desired twist imparted to it subsequently, e.g. by the double twist machine described in Specification 369,433, [Group XI]. In an example, thread spun in the bath 11 from nozzle 12 passes around thread guide 13, positively driven draw-off guide 14, thread guide 15, and again roller 14, then under thread guide 16 and under tension to the positively driven friction roller 17 with continuous helical groove 18 which lays it on to bobbin 19 secured on pivoted arm 20 and rotated from roll 17. The bobbin may consist of three portions 22, 23, 24, Fig. 3, connected by dovetails and grooves. The assembled bobbin core may be cylindrical or tapering slightly, and certain constituents of the bobbin may also be slightly tapered. Before winding on the core it is preferably covered with fabric or other protective covering. By the invention, spun packages containing a large weight of thread (200-500 gms. or more) may be produced in one operation.
