[Class 145 (ii)] [See also Group XXII] In apparatus for making tubes, strip material is formed with transverse slots b between its side edges and spaced from each other longitudinally of the strip, bent to tubular form, welded and severed on lines B coincident with the slots. The strip is fed by rolls 3, Fig. 5, with adjustable blades 117 for forming the slots B. Rolls flatten the slots and further rolls regularize the edge of the strip. The strip is then bent to tubular form by rolls and the seam is welded. A cutter or saw 143, rotated by an electromotor 148, is carried in a sleeve on adjustable arms 146 pivoted about the shaft 149. The cutter unit is mounted on a slide 152 reciprocated in ways by crank mechanism from a shaft 164. During its reciprocation the cutter is swung about the shaft 149 to effect severance by a stationary cam. The slide actuating shaft 164 is rotated through a one revolution clutch on the shaft 171. When the slot 6, Fig. 16, passes between magnet poles 187 the induced current in the leads 188 is reduced to de-energize a relay 185 which energizes a coil 182 to release a finger 177 of the one revolution clutch. In a modification a mechanical detent engages the slot and actuates the clutch. In a further modification Fig. 24, light from a source 300 passes through the slot and affects a light sensitive cell 302 in circuit with a relay and coil arranged to operate the finger 177.
