Abstract

653,613. Paper &c. tubes. ROBINSON, E. B. July 24, 1944, No. 14107. [Class 99(ii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XL(b)] Paper &c. tubes each bearing a printed, unitary pattern 7, Fig. 1, and formed from strip material 2 on which patterns are printed at an angle, by winding the strip helically on a mandrel 3 and cutting lengths from the tube as it leaves the mandrel, the cuts being timed to sever the tube between successive patterns by means of a detector actuated by a control mark 9 or device on the strip. Blank spaces 8 on the strip 2 form spaces between the tubes for purpose of trim. A beam of light is reflected from the strip to a light-sensitive cell connected to a circuit containing a valve 16, Fig. 5, to amplify the impulses, which are then applied to the grid of a gasfilled relay 17. The current in a relay circuit containing a reset switch 18 operates a further relay 19 to energise a solenoid 20 adapted to release a catch 21 from a rotatable barrel 22 having a cam groove 25 and follower 26, Fig. 6 A motor is reciprocated on a guide 28 at the same speed as the tube and is swung laterally by reason of the increasing depth of the cam groove so that the saw 6 severs the tube. The switch 18 is operated by the motor at the limit of its travel. The strip 2 overlaps at the edges, the length of tube produced being varied by varying the angle of the helical winding such as by adjusting the angle of an end less belt 4 which rotates the tube on the mandrel.
