July 4, 1934, No. 19739. [Class 36] An insulated cable or cord comprises two or more cores and fibrous fillings in the interstices between the cores, each filling being formed from a roving consisting wholly or mainly of wool, to which roving the necessary additional twist has been imparted in the assembling process to form a sufficiently dense yarn or cord. The assembly of cores and fillings is enclosed in a braid which may be treated with a fire-resisting and /or waterproofing compound. A laying-up machine for use in making such a cable comprises a rotating cage 2 carrying floating bobbins 3, 4, two of which carry loose rovings 1 and the others insulated conductors 5. The rovings and cores are drawn through a die plate 6 and die 7 by a draw-off capstan 8 whence they pass through a traversing guide 9 to a take-up drum 10. The cage 2 is rotated in such a direction that the cores and fillings are assembled with a lay of opposite hand to the twist initially present in the rovings.
