Abstract

438,009. Electrolytic cells. PESTALOZZA, P., 17, Via Guerrazzi, Milan, Italy. May 23, 1935, No. 15075. Convention date, May 23, 1934. [Class 41] A cell for the electrolysis of alkali metal chlorides comprises a horizontal or slightly inclined wire netting cathode 8 mounted beneath the anodes 11 and an intermediate screen consisting of a wire network 9 covered with asbestos fabric 10 extending across the entire cross-section of the cell ; the screen damps any movement of the electrolyte and allows separation of hydrogen through an aperture 7 but has no diaphragm action. Caustic alkali passes to a chamber 3 and is removed by a syphon 4. Chlorine is removed at 12. A diaphragm may be provided in addition to the screen, the screen is then arranged underneath the anode. The screen may be bent at intervals to form straight or S-shaped flanges which rest on the cathode. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the screen, comprising a wire network 13 and asbestos fabric 14, is provided with bent portions 16 against which pairs of angle bars 15 constituting the cathode are pressed.
