437,838. Weighing-apparatus fitted to cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO., 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. July 28, 1934, No. 22123. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1933. [Class 143] [See also Group VI] A machine for weighing or checking the weight of cigarettes delivered from a continuous rod cigarette-making machine comprises means for automatically selecting cigarettes at intervals, one at a time, from a stream of cigarettes and transferring them to a weighing or weight checking device having means for repeatedly discharging a single cigarette at each operation, whereby there is always a predetermined number of cigarettes present on the weighing device. In operation a framework 1 carrying the mechanism is lowered by a lever 3 so that a roll 11 engages a collector belt 53 carrying the stream of cigarettes. The roll, operating through gearing, drives a shaft 6 carrying a scoop 17 which is shaped to accommodate a single cigarette. At each rotation, the scoop picks up a cigarette from the belt and drops it into shoot 32 whence it rolls into one of the flutes of a rotary member 33 suspended from a weighbeam 26. A stationary cam 22 actuates a finger 18 so as to retain the cigarette in the scoop until it reaches the shoot 33. A shield 30, also supported by the weighbeam, closes a predetermined number (nine in the present instance) of the flutes so that ten cigarettes always load the weighbeam. The fluted member 33 is rotated one step by a cam and pawl mechanism before each cigarette is supplied by the scoop 17, the rotation causing a cigarette to be discharged over the edge 30<a> of the shield on to the belt 53 and bringing an empty flute into position to receive the new cigarette. The scoop 17 selects one cigarette in every fifty or other predetermined number according to the relative speeds of the scoop and collector belt. The weighing scale is steadied during the stepping of the fluted member 33 by a cam-controlled lever 50 which is brought to bear resiliently on the scale pendulum 31. The weighbeam carries a pointer 27 co-operating with a graduated scale 28.
