Abstract
437,800. Water-cooled valves. LAKE, W. H., Cranbrook, Harpfield, Stoke-on-Trent. May 31, 1935, No. 15885. [Class 135] A water-cooled valve for controlling the flow of hot gases, in for example a furnace, comprises an open-ended tank 1, Fig. 1, one face of which cooperates with a valve seating around the passage 4, of a sufficient water capacity to keep the metal cool by boiling for a considerable time in the event of the supply of cooling water failing. An apron 6 is arranged round the top of the tank and dips into an annular water trough 5 to provide a seal around the top of the casing whilst allowing free movement for the valve to bear firmly on to its seat. Fig. 4 shows one of a number of modifications in which the valve is constructed as a damper valve co-operating with a seat 9 and which is raised or lowered to control the passage 3. In other modifications the valve member is slidable and may cooperate with a water cooled seating.
