[Class 83 (iv)] A metal - working press for cupping, punching or like stamping operations is provided with a fluid-actuated cushion for yieldingly supporting the part carrying the work, the cushion comprising a plurality of relatively-movable pistons and cylinders operable by fluid pressure to act in the yieldable top plate, and means movable to render at least one of the pistons and its associated cylinder inoperative without effecting at least one of the other pistons and its associated cylinder. Pistons 16, 17 are disposed in a cylinder 14 respectively above and below a partition 15, the piston 16 carrying the yielding top 22. The piston 17 is provided with a piston rod 23 extending into a recess 24 in the piston 16, the recess containing a rotatable spacing disc 25 with a bore 26 of a size to receive the upper end of the piston rod 23. The cylinder 14 is mounted in a fixed support 12 to which a pressure fluid, e.g. compressed air or liquid under pressure, is supplied through an inlet 18, the fluid passing through the annular chamber 19 directly to the underside of the piston 17 and, through a conduit 20 in the partition 15, to the underside of the piston 16. When the spacer 25 is in the position shown, the pistons 16 and 17 combine in applying an upward thrust to the top plate 22 but, if the spacer is rotated through 180‹, the piston 17 is rendered inoperative. In a modification, the spacer 25 is removable instead of rotatable and the piston 16 is surrounded by an additional piston which acts through a removable spacer on the top plate. With this construction, either or both of the spacers can be removed to render either the lower piston 17, the annular piston, or both of them, inoperative as desired.
