[Class 28 (ii)] In a slicing- machine having in combination slicestacking mechanism including a rotatable slice conveyer ; a guide for attaching the slice thereto and a slice-thick ness - determining gauge, or fence, in close proximity to the knife and guide, the arrangement is such that slices being cut by the knife pass from the gauge to the conveyer between the knife and guide. The gauge may be used for initially positioning the article when the machine has a mechanical feed, or it may be used for controlling the manual feed when mechanical feed means are not provided. As shown, the gauge 15 is mounted for adjustment parallel to the slicing plane on rods 16, 17, and is formed integrally with the guide 28 which is bent back to connect with a comblike portion 29. The conveyer 23 may be operated by means as described in Specifications 353,442 to 353,446, suitably modified to drive it clockwise. The slice passes between the knife 13 and the guide 28 and is then engaged by the conveyer spikes 22 which bend it backwards to travel along the fingers 29 in a direction substantially opposite to that of the substance during the slicing stroke. The fingers 29 press the slice on to the spikes 22 and the discharge fly fingers 24 are formed to move the leading end of the slice away from the body of the conveyer. The fly swings in a direction opposite to that of the slicing stroke and deposits the slice on the table 27. The fingers 29 may be resilient, or they may have a spring mounting on the plate 15 so that they are urged towards the conveyer 23. The conveyer may oscillate instead of rotate. The rods 16, 17 or other guide means for the gauge 15, may be so arranged that the gauge is adjusted in a direction substantially parallel to the rear of the knife rim, the portion 28 being then arranged always to leave an adequate slice-passage space between itself and the knife.
