437,276. Presses and hammers. TOWLER, F. H., Sunnyside Farm, Norwood Bottom, near Otley, and TOWLER, J. M., Wells House, Thruscross, Summerbridge, Harrogate, both in Yorkshire. April 23, 1934, Nos. 12125 and 17194. [Class 83 (iv)] Hydraulic cushioning means for hammers, presses and the like prevent damage for example to the dies, should the press &c. be operated without a blank in position. As shown, the anvil b carrying the lower die is in the form of a piston working in a cylinder a filled with liquid. The piston has a reduced part d sliding in an aperture e in the wall of the cylinder, and has packing glands at f and g. The cylinder is supplied with oil or other liquid under pressure by means of a pump a non-return valve j being arranged in the inlet connection. In a modification a hand controlled valve leads to a storage tank and allows of liquid escaping from the container until such time as it is closed to cushion the blow.
