437,183. Vehicle spring-suspensions. LESLIE, I. A., Fairwater, Evesham, Worcestershire. March 20, 1934, No. 8650. [Class 108 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] In a motor vehicle in which the engine unit is pivotally connected to the chassis frame so as to allow relative rocking about a longitudinal axis, the front road wheels are connected to the frame by suspension springs and to the engine by shock dampers. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the engine and gearbox unit a, a<1> is mounted on front and rear trunnions, b<2>, b, carried by the frame a<z> which is supported on the front axle d<2> by leaf springs in usual manner. Hydraulic or friction shock dampers e are carried by the engine and connected to the axle d<2> by arms f<1> and links f. The front trunnion pin b<2>, passing through a yoke b<4> bolted to the engine is mounted in ears of a bracket b<5> carried by a frame cross member b<6>. At the rear end, the unit is shown supported by a trunnion b in a frame member b<1> but alternatively it may be rigidly connected by a torque tube to the rear axle casing, the front mounting, in this case, including rubber packing or other provision for universal movement. Further locating means between the engine and frame are provided comprising lugs c engaging rubber blocks c<1> carried by the frame longitudinals a<2> and lugs or feet d to support the engine if the gear box is dismounted. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the front wheels d<1> are independently sprung, being connected to a hollow front cross frame member g by radius rods g<2> and lovers g<1> having arms passing into the frame member g in which are mounted coil springs taking the weight. Links h connect the outer ends of the arms g<1> to the arms h<2> of shock dampers e bolted to the timing gear casing h on the engine. Rubber buffers g<3> limit the displacement of the members g<1>, g<2>.
