[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] In an electromagnetic clutch or brake, an elastic band 1 of ferromagnetic material embracing a rotating cylindrical drum 2 has its out-turned ends 5 engaging in a recess 6 in an outer member 7 which, in the case of a brake, is secured against rotation and, in the case of a clutch, is rotatable. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the band is of U-shaped section, having radial slits 3 to increase its resiliency, and houses a coil 10 supplied with current through conductors 12. As shown in Fig. 5, the band is of rectangular section and has inwardly-extending pole pins 4 carrying coils 16. On excitation of the windings, flux passes through the band and the drum 2, and the former is attracted into frictional contact with the latter, the trailing end of the band abutting against the end of the recess 6, while the leading end is free, so as to give a self-tightening effect.
