Abstract

436,991. Applying adhesive tapes. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Metropolitan Sewing Machine Corporation; Nyack, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 3, 1934, No. 28316. [Class 73] [See also Group VII] A seam-forming machine comprises a mechanism for stitching superposed main plies to form a seam, and mechanism for pressing adhesive tape to one or both faces of the seam. On a table 45 are located first and second sewing - mechanisms 46, 47 and an intermediate taping mechanism 48. all three mechanisms being operated by a common driving mechanism. The mechanism 46 has a trimming device 79 so that two plies can be stitched together and trimmed. The seam may be opened and flattened ready for the application of the tape. The multiple needle mechanism 47 then sews down the turned-over edges of the seam and the tape. The work, consisting of two superposed main plies 86, is guided from the seaming machine 46 to the taping mechanism 48 by a guide 89. This is in the form of a horn with a yoke 90 adapted to hook and pivot on a roller stud 72. It extends from the tape roller 71 and has a narrow finger fitting between the main plies. An adjustable stud 93 can regulate the spacing of the finger from the cloth plate to permit free passage of the lower ply. The guide has side walls with flared ends for opening and turning back the seam edges, ready for the application of the tape as it passes between the rollers 70, 71. The work is taped on one or both sides of the seam as desired and fed on to the twoneedle machine 47 which stitches down the tape and folds back the seam edges to form a seam such as shown in Fig. 30. The edgefolding device may be rendered inactive to produce seams such as shown in Fig. 31. The first-sewing mechanism 46 may employ a zig-zag stitch to produce the flat seams as shown in Fig. 32. The tape is supplied from upper and lower spools 122, 123 with suitable tape guides. For sewing and taping curved seams the sewing and taping mechanisms may be at different horizontal planes and out of line, the guiding means being modified accordingly. The three mechanisms are driven from a common electromotor, but means are provided to interrupt the drive between the mechanisms to compensate for slippage, feed irregularities, stretching of work, &c.
