[Class 78 (ii)] [See also Group XXXII] Relates to a shock-absorber for use in a towing connection between, for example, a tug-boat and barge, or in the hoisting and lowering rope of a crane or mine-cage, or in the steering chains or lines of a ship, and of the type comprising two levers or two pairs of levers 1, 1<a> and 2, 2<a> having convex surfaces adapted to roll on each other, the levers being pivoted each at one end to movable spring - controlled blocks 5, 6 mounted on a rod 7 carrying a compression spring 10 and connected each at the other or free end to load-transmitting blocks 16, 17 carried on a pull-rod 19 forming part of loadtransmitting means adapted to move these blocks towards each other against the action of the spring 10. According to the invention the opposite ends of one of the levers or pairs of levers 2, 2<a> are coupled through the rods 7, 19 to a link or pair of links 13, 13<a> arranged parallel or substantially so, to a line connecting the pivots at the opposite ends of the lever or each of the levers 2, 2<a> so as to form therewith a parallel-motion device adapted to prevent slipping of the levers on each other. The rod 19 extends through the end member 21<a> of a stirrup-shaped holder 21 and is connected, for example, to a tug-boat 25 by means of an eye 19<a> on the rod pivoting vertically on a U-shaped shackle 23, 23<a> mounted on a bracket 24 fixed to the boat, while between the opposite bent-in ends 21<b> of the holder 21 a hook 26, having a keeper 27, is pivoted for connection, for example, to a barge to be towed. In a modification, Fig. 3, the stirrup-shaped holder 28 is arranged as shown and carries at one end a pivot 22 by means of which the shock-absorber is connected to a curved bar 24 fixed to the towing member. The blocks 16, 17 are carried on a rod 19<b> which at its rear end passes through the closed end 28<a> of the holder and is secured to a stirrupmember 29 pivotally-supporting a towing or hauling hook 26, while at its forward end the rod 19b is flattened to move between vertical rollers 30<a> carried by the holder 28. The relative normal position of the levers 1, 1<a> and 2, 2<a> may be adjusted by means of the block 16 which is screwed on the rod 19, Figs. 1, 2, or 19<b>, Fig. 3.
