Abstract
438,492. Shock-absorbing devices. MONARCH DOOR CONTROLLER CO., Ltd., SMITH, G. W. PETTIGREW-, and SAMS, J. G. B., 7, Victoria Street, Westminster. April 23, 1935, No. 12201. [Class 78 (ii)] [See also Group XXXII] The invention relates to a shock-absorbing arrangement, for incorporation in a hoisting rope or chain or in a rope used to connect a vessel to a bollard or in a towing connection, comprising two pairs of levers having curved coacting surfaces for varying the fulcrum of the levers when their outer ends are moved. According to the invention, the normally adjacent ends of each pair of levers are arranged nearer the centre line of the shock absorber than the normally diverging ends of the levers and the levers of each pair are made to roll against each other by means subject to tension applied to the outer end of one or of each of the two levers. The inner ends of the levers 1, 2 and 3, 4 are pivotally mounted on cross heads 6, 6<a> which slide on a rod 7 against the compression of rubber blocks 8, 8<a> or metallic springs when the outer ends of the levers are moved towards each other by pairs of links 14, 14<a> (not shown), 15, 15<a>, 10, 10<a> (not shown), and 11, 11<a> under the action of tension applied at the hook 13<a> and shackle 18. In a modified construction, Fig. 4, for towing an object at or near the surface of the sea, ropes 29, 30 are attached to levers 1, 3 pivotally mounted to the member 25 and provided with curved surfaces coacting with similar surfaces on the levers 2, 4 which are mounted on the member 25. The ends of the levers 2, 4 have rods 31, 32 with caps 35, 36 engaging the ends of springs 33, 34 which are compressed against abutments 25<a>, 25<b> carried on the member 25.
