Abstract
436,344. Typewriters. DEUTSCH, R., 20, Anton-Kriegergasse, Mauer, near Vienna. Jan. 14, 1935, No. 1252. Convention date, Jan. 16, 1934. [Class 100 (iv)] Portable type-lever machines; paper carriages and supports; carriage-shift mechanism; letterspacing mechanism.-A machine having a collapsable platen is constructed in the following manner, chiefly with the object of so reducing the height and base-area that the collapsed machine can be carried in the pocket. The action key-levers 49, Fig. 2, universal bail 52, and carriage-shifting arms are mounted on a common shaft 53, the key-levers being guided by slots 95 in the type-lever segment 74 and being in engagement with returning- springs 51 formed on a comb. The spacekey 62 is pivoted at 65 to levers 66 and is turned upwards when the machine is collapsed. The escapement-wheel 30 co-operates directly with a perforated steel band 28, or a chain, arranged as described below. The type-levers 57 may be formed with eccentric gear-sectors co-operating with similar gear-sectors on levers 58 which are connected to the kevlevers. The platen of the machine shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5 is constituted by a sleeve 1 frictionally mounted on a tube 7, and by two segmental members 2 which form extensions of the roller when the machine is in use. The roller is mounted on a telescopic tube 5 and shaft 51 which are journalled in the end plates 171, 17 of the carriage. The roller is provided with a pin 9 engaging a groove 5<111> in the shaft, and when the machine is extended the roller abuts on the end of a reduced part 92 of the tube to ensure centring. The members 2 are secured to arms 3 on a telescopic tube 4 and shaft 4<1> which are journalled in the end plates 171, 17 and can be rocked by means of a finger-lever 27. The carriage base consists of telescopic slides 10, 11 carrying the end plates 17, 17<1>, the slide 11 being provided with a, pivoted catch 14 which engages the end of the slide 10 when the machine is extended, engagement being maintained by the pressure transmitted from a spring 16 arranged between the end plate 17 and a cap 18 on the shaft 5<1>. On depression of the finger-lever 27, the extensions 2 are raised, the catch 14 is released, and the machine can be collapsed. The carriage base is mounted on a horizontally movable frame which is connected by links to the shifting-arms on the shaft 53. An alternative platen consists of a rubber sleeve secured at the ends to a telescopic tube and shaft. Another alternative platen consists of a plate 67, Fig. 14, which can be folded on a hinge 69 and is arranged above paperfeed rollers 1, 19. The carriage-slide 10 is connected to a spring-drum 29, Fig. 5, by the perforated band or chain 28 which co-operates directly with the escapement-wheel 30, formation of slack in the band being prevented by a cord 37 which winds off a pulley on the spring-drum, passes over guide-pulleys 38, 39, and is connected by a spring 41 to the carriageslide 10. Sheet-feeding arrangements.-.4- feed-roller 19, Figs. 1 and 2, co-operating with the platenroller 1, is mounted on a telescopic shaft 20, 21 in the same manner as the platen-roller, the shaft being connected by gears 26, 25 to the shaft 5<1>. The feed-roller is held in contact with the platen-roller by means of an arm 23 on a spring-urged shaft 22. The fingerlever 27 is arranged to rock the shaft, and thereby retract the arm, when the machine is collapsed.
