Abstract

159,705. James, R. W., (Remington Typewriter Co.). Dec. 30, 1919. Folding type-lever machines. - In a machine having compactible type-levers 15, as described in Specification 154,323, a pad 42 which can be raised and lowered by means of a hand-crank 62 is provided for collapsing and expanding the typelevers. The pad 42 is mounted in a trough 46 on a segmental frame 43 having ears 48 at its ends guided in fixed guides 50 attached to the typelever segment 3. The trough 46 rests in the collapsed position close to the action sub-levers 22 and so blocks the actions against operation. The hand-crank 62 is on a rock-shaft 60 connected by arm 58 and links 56 to the ends of the frame 43. For compactness, the hand-crank 62 is mounted between the side plate 1 of the machine and the outer casing 8 and is provided with a finger-piece projecting through an arcuate slot in the casing. Means are provided for locking the hand-crank in its two positions; for example, the finger-piece is combined with a spring plunger engageable in holes 66 in the side plate 1. Alternatively the hand-crank may be located outside the casing and be thin enough to be sprung outwards for adjusting a fixed pin on it into holes in the outer casing.
