[Class 28 (ii)] A slicing-machine is provided with a detachable unit for cutting the substance at an angle to its length, the unit comprising an auxiliary substance engager and mechanism for feeding it at an angle towards the plane of the slicing knife. The angle at which the slices are cut by the auxiliary unit can be varied. Fig. 1 shows a slicing machine with the usual reciprocating carriage 10 operated by a crank 11 and rod 12 connected to a pin 13 on the carriage. The substance engager comprises a feed table 15 which is moved longitudinally by a screw 17 carrying a ratchet wheel 18 as shown in end view in Fig. 2. A pawl 19 is carried by a member 20 which is journalled on an unthreaded part of the screw 17. The pawl is controlled by a shroud 21 adjustably connected to a member 22 slidably supported in a fixture 23 on the carriage 10. By adjusting the position of the shroud by a hand member 22<a> the thickness of the slices cut by the knife 14 can be varied, the available slice thicknesses being indicated by graduations on the fixture 23. The pawl is oscillated with a constant amplitude by means of a link 27 pivoted to the pawl carrier 20 and to a lever 25 which is moved at intervals by a roller 24 on the rod 12. Uprights 28, 29, Fig. 1, which support the usual substance-engaging clamp and end-piece holder are also used to support the detachable unit as shown, the usual substance-engaging clamp being removed. The detachable unit is attached to the uprights 28, 29 by lugs 36, and comprises two parts 30, 31, Fig. 3, pivoted together at 32 and angularly adjustable by a clamp and slot 33, 35. The part 31 is provided with a plate 40 carrying a feed plate 41 secured to a member 43 formed as a part of a sleeve 44 slidable on an auxiliary feed screw 45 as shown in Fig. 4. The plate 41 is provided with a substance engager consisting of prongs 49 on a rotatable rod 48 journalled in the member 43. The sleeve 44 is provided with a pin 52, Fig. 3, which can engage either in the helical groove 45<a> of the screw 45 or in an annular groove 45b. When the pin is in the groove 45a the plate 41 moves downwardly towards the plane X of the slicing knife with the rotation of the screw 45 which is produced by a freewheel pinion 54 meshing with a rack 55 which terminates in a knob 60 as shown in Fig. 2. The rack is given an intermittent motion by an oscillating arm 61 on a shaft 62 which carries an arm 64 connected through links 65, 66 to the link 27 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The amount of lost motion between the arm 61 and knob 60, Fig. 2, determines the slice thickness and can be varied by altering the combined length of the links 65, 66 by telescoping the link 66 into the member 67 which is rotatable and notched to engage a pin 69 on the link 66 and thus hold the parts together. Figs. 5, 6 show a modification in which a frame 70 is fitted on the uprights 28, 29 and is provided with a feed screw 72 on which is a slidable forked member 73 carrying a rod 74 having substanceengaging prongs 74<b>. The member 73 can be attached to the screw 72 by a pin 80 on a lever 79 pivoted to the member 73. The screw 72 is provided with a freewheel pinion 82 which meshes with a rack bar 83 which is moved periodically through a lever 86 and shaft 87 which carries an arm 90. The arm 90 is moved periodically by a link 91, 92 whose length can be varied to vary the slice thickness. The link 91, 92 can be given a reciprocating motion by connection to the rod 12 or from an abutment on the base upon which the carriage reciprocates.
