Abstract

436,185. Testing hardness of metals. EUGENE, F., 3, Rue Georges Bizet, Colombes, Seine, France. Jan. 14, 1935, No. 1160. Convention date, Jan. 13, 1934. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a penetrator carrying member subjected to a variable load and an optical magnifying and indicating system, the former acting on a system of levers which transmits an amplified movement to the pivoted reflector of the optical system. The specimen is adapted to be mounted on a table 19 provided with a ball joint 18 by which it is carried on a screwed part 14a which can slide vertically rotating in a hollow pillar 3 slidably clamped at 6 in the base 1 of a casing 2. The penetrator is carried by a member 41 mounted to slide in ball bearings 21, 22 in the goose-nock head 2a of the casing 2. The bearing 21 is in one with a ball-bearing 32 for the axis of the loading lever 33 which is counterweighted at 34, carries loading weights on a bush 37 and is provided with a sliding jockey weight 39. The lever 33 has a blunt point 40 adapted to engage the upper end of the member 41. A light lever 46 is mounted on a pivot 47 carried by ears 45 on the bearing 22 a tail piece 48 engaging a pin 49 mounted in a mortice 50 in the member 41. The free end of the lever 46 carries a pin 51 on which bears a finger 63 secured to an L-shaped bracket 60 pivoted on a support 52 itself pivoted about an axis 53 carried by the frame 2. The support 52 is slotted at 54 to accommodate a screw 56 which passes to a nut 58 which serves to regulate the screw against the influence of a spring 57 urging the support 52 away from the frame. A small electric lamp condenser and reticule are mounted in a holder 67 universally mounted in the frame at 68, 69. A conical cap 70 is screwed on to the bearing 22 and after adjustment locked by a nut 71. In use, the specimen is placed on to the table and moved up to engage the penetrator and abut against the cap. The load is then applied by loosening the screw 42 which normally holds the lever 33 with its blunt point 40 clear of the penetrator, the depth of the indentation is indicated on a graduated screen 65.
