Abstract

Bactericidal bodies containing oligodynamically active materials for the sterilization of water and other liquids are made in three different ways: (1) the materials, e.g. sand and kaolin, usually employed for making filtering bodies are mixed with a colloidal sol of an oligodynamically active metal or a sol of an oligodynamically active compound of such a metal and the mixture is formed into rigid porous filtering bodies of the desired shape; (2) existing rigid porous filtering bodies are impregnated with a sol of oligodynamically active colloids and a coagulation of the colloidal material impregnating the mass is produced by a later addition of an electrolyte, and (3) existing rigid porous filtering bodies are introduced as a diaphragm into an electrolytic cell in which the anions of the cathodic compartment and the cations of the anodic compartment precipitate in the interior of the said bodies an oligodynamically active gel; e.g. a solution of a soluble salt of an oligodynamic metal may be put into the anodic compartment and a salt of an alkali metal introduced into the cathodic compartment.
