Abstract

435,473. Developing sound-films. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., Frankforton-Main, Germany. March 23, 1934, No. 9171. Convention date, March 25, 1933. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVIII] Relates to the photographic recording of sound by the variable density method, and to the preparation of a positive print from an original negative in such a manner that the product of the gammas of the positive and of the negative may be unity. According to the invention, the negative film is developed to a gradation of # greater than 1, the exposure having been such that the blackenings corresponding to the maximum and minimum lie on the straight part of the characteristic curve ; a print is then made on an undyed film, the exposure being such that the blackening lies on the straight part of the curve, and the development of the positive is such that its y is the reciprocal of that of the negative. In this way, instead of producing from an original having a flat gradation a relatively dense print, as hitherto, a print having a high average transmission is obtained. Graphs are given in the Specification, to explain the principle of the invention, and a specific example of the procedure to be followed is described, with details including formulae of metol and metol-hydroquinone developers.
