Abstract
434,284. Ciphering - apparatus. CALLENDER'S CABLE & CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd., Hamilton House, Victoria Embankment, and ESSER, B. C. J., 18, Versailles Road, Anerley, both in London. April 6, 1934, No. 10517. [Class 146 (ii)] Apparatus for use in preparing and checking messages in a code of the type in which each letter of the alphabet is assigned a particular value as a code letter and as a check letter and in which the check letter added to a code word has a value equal to the sum of the values of the letters in the code word, consists of a pair of elements relatively rotatable about a common axis and provided on their adjacent surfaces with a series of spaces which respectively bear numbers and letters so arranged that, in the zero position, the letters lie opposite to the numbers corresponding to their values as check letters. As shown, the device consists of a recessed disc 1 secured to a base, and housing in the recess a second disc 6 pivoted on the axis 7 of the recess. The adjacent surfaces of the discs are divided by radiallyextending lines or ribs into a number of spaces ; on the pivoted disc, the spaces contain the letters of the alphabet and recesses to facilitate rotating the disc ; on the fixed disc the spaces contain a series of numbers corresponding to the values of the letters as check letters and arranged so that when the disc 6 is at zero position the letters are opposite the corresponding numerals ; the numerals may be replaced or supplemented by one or more series of letters, each letter being arranged in the sector corresponding to its value as a code letter in the various positions in the code word. A fixed stop 10 is secured to the disc 1 and projects over the disc 6. A table giving the value of each letter for each of its three positions in the code words may be arranged on the lower surface of the base. The disc 6 may project over the disc 1 and be apertured to display the numerals and letters thereon.
