Abstract
434,023. U - tube heat exchangers ; water-tube steam boilers. LEWIS, W. Y., 17, Woronzow Road, St. John's Wood, London. Feb. 21, 1934, Nos. 5762 and 20353. [Classes 64 (iii) and 123 (ii)] In a U-tube element fitted with open ended inner tubes 3, Figs. 1, 2, as described in Specification 380,548, the bend 2<c> is divided by a partition 2<d> forming passages 2e, 2f receiving the ends of the inner tubes. To facilitate the insertion of the inner tubes, each tube is made in two lengths, which are connected together by a flexible closely wound wire coil 5 having bent over ends engaging fins 3<c> on the two lengths. The inner tubes are held in position by pins 3<e> resting on the top of the partition in the bend, and by pins 3f resting against the upper end of the U-tube. In a water-tube boiler, some of the inner tubes of the elements pass freely through holes in cast iron blocks 11, Fig. 8, having spherical under surfaces seating in holes in the partition plate 9 of the boiler drum. Thin plates 13 over the ends of the outer tubes prevent backward water circulation. Tail pieces 6 welded on the elements to assist in their support may be made hollow and fitted with screwed plugs 7 which may be removed to allow escape of water from the bends.
