Description

June 4, 1929. J. HATCH BOILER WATER PREHEATER Filed Feb. 24, 1928 Patented June 4, 1929.
UNITED STATES JOHN HATCH, OF GOLD PINES, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BOILER WATER PREHEA'IER.
Application filed February 24, 1928. Serial No. 256,612.
The present invention relates to an appara tus for preheating the water which is used in a boiler and has for its prime object to provide an easily assembled and knock down structure comprising a plurality of similarly constructed elements so that a suitable number thereof may be used. to build the preheater in different sized boiler constructions.
Another very important object of the in vention resides in the provision of a built up and knock down structure of this nature which is simple in its formation of parts, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, thoroughly e'flicient and reliable in use, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the firebox of a boiler and my improved structure therein, taken substantially on the line 11 of Figure 2,
Figure 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the casting units.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes an ordinary boiler extending from a fire box structure 6 above a grate 7. Fireproof apparatus comprises a plurality of castings C includin hollow bodies 8 having lateral sleeve extensions 9 one at each end to receive tubes 10. Each casting is provided with lug extensions 10 and 11 at the ends thereof. The extensions 10 are tapered while the extensions 11 are formed with. recesses to receive the tapered portion of the extensions 10 as is clearly illustrated in Figure 2. Spacing lugs 14 are provided on the sides of the body 8 to engage the interior wall of the firebox as is shown to advantage in Figure 2. Thus it will be seen that with a plurality of the castings C arranged in pairs with tubes disposed therebetween terminating in the sleeves 9, that a unit is built up following the contour of the firebox. This unit may be connected with the boiler 5 by a pipe 15. An injector 16 may be used to lead the water into the units thus formed.
From the above detailed description it will be seen that I have devised a construction which may be manufactured in its several parts at a relatively low cost and may be built up in different sized boilers because of its ease of assembly and its knock down features.
It is thought that the construction, utility and advantages of the invent-ion will now be clearly understood without a more detailed description. thereon. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprising a plurality of tubes arranged in spaced parallelism and. a plurality of castings for communicating the tubes together for providing a sinuous circulating conduit, each casting comprising a hollow body having laterally extending sleeves to receive the tube, and provided. at its ends with lugs one of which is tapered and the other of which is recessed for holding the castings in end to end spaced relation, said castings being pro vided with lateral spacing lugs to en gage the interior wall of a fire box.
2. An apparatus of the class described comprising a plurality of tubes arranged in spaced parallelism and a plurality of castings for communicating the tubes together for providing a sinuous circulating conduit, each casting comprising a hollow body having lat orally extending sleeves to receive the tube. and provided at its ends with lugs one of which is tapered and the other of which is recessed for holding the castings in end to end spaced relation, said castings being provided with lateral spacing lugs to engage the interior wall of a fire box, means for connecting the conduits thus formed with a boiler.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN HATCH.
