Abstract

433,985. Massage apparatus. PELLI, M. RUTTGER-, 42, Habsburgstrasse, Lucerne, Switzerland. July 9, 1934, No. 20085. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1933. [Class 81 (ii)] A massaging-apparatus, of the kind described in Specifications 259,867 and 328,532, [both in Class 81 (ii)], is provided with means for facilitating replacement of the massaging balls in their holders, means for imparting swinging movements to the holders, and means for lubricating the bearings of the holders. The device comprises a casing 1, Fig. 2, containing a frame 2 having a hub 5 in which a bushing 6 is fixed. A hollow shaft 7 is journalled in the bushing, and the shaft 8 of a rotary disc 9 extends through the shaft 7. A nut 11, which screws on to one end of the shaft 8, enables this shaft to be clamped to the bushing 6 when required. A number of ball holders 14 are journalled in the rotary disc 9, and a ball 16 is retained by a cap screw 42 in a recess in the head of each holder. The head is eccentrically placed on its stem 17, and a planet pinion 18, fixed on each stem 17, meshes with a spur wheel 20 secured to the hollow shaft 7. The stems 17 are free to slide longitudinally in the disc 9 and are normally pressed outwards by springs 21. The shaft 7 is rotated by gear wheels 25, 27 driven by a worm secured to a shaft 4 which is housed in the handle 3 of the device and is driven by any suitable means. In use, the shaft 8 may be locked to the bushing 6 by the nut 11, or it may be allowed to rotate. In the first case, each of the ball holders rotates on its own axis, each ball then being rotated in a circle of small diameter. In the second case, the ball holder is also rotated about the axis of the disc 9 as the disc is also free to rotate. The ball holders may also be made to oscillate as the disc rotates, and for this purpose, each of the stems 17 carries on its inward end a lever 44, Fig. 4, the free end of which engages in a cam groove 46 formed on a plate 47 secured to the frame of the device. The shaft 8 has an axial bore 33, Fig. 2, which is continued by branches 34 within the disc 9. Lubricant is supplied through these passages to the bushing 6 and the bearings of the ball holders.
