[Class 65 (ii)] In the assembly of a joint comprising inner and outer cylindrical members with a rubber or like bushing compressed between them, the bushing B being first inserted in the outer member A and the inner member D (shown as a sleeve), being then inserted in the bushing B by means of a mandrel C, sliding of the bushing B on the member D is avoided by accommodating the greater part of the member D in a bore in the tail C<1> of the mandrel ; the bushing slides over the mandrel until a part of it grips the projecting portion of the member D, which then remains stationary while the mandrel moves on and leaves the bushing in position on the member D. This method of assembly is particularly applicable to joints having an inner member with a corrugated or other rough surface which would prevent relative sliding of the members B, D. The first part of the operation is performed by pressure on a rod E bearing on the end of member D, and after the member D has stopped moving owing to the grip of the rubber the mandrel C continues under its momentum; this movement may be assisted by slightly tapering the mandrel towards its rear end to facilitate the passing off of the bushing. This method may be employed where the insertion of the sleeve is performed in two stages as described in Specification 433,604.
