Abstract
Surfacing materials for decoration or building purposes comprise cement and/or whiting and a solution containing gelatine or glue and a cellulose derivative, preferably with the addition of alum or similar hardening material. The cellulose derivative is dissolved in a solvent so that it is compatible with the glue or gelatine solution. A solution known as "Hadfields Clear Lacquer" containing a cellulose ester or ether, e.g. cellulose nitrate, resins and plasticizers in a solvent, preferably of high boiling point, comprising aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. xylol, ester or ketone solvents, e.g. butyl acetate or cyclohexanone, and alcohols such as butanol, is suitable. A suitable mixture consists of 12--15 lbs. of cement to a gallon of solution containing 4 ozs. gelatine, 3 gills "Hadfields Clear Lacquer," and \ba1/2\be oz. alum. The gelatine is soaked in cold water until it softens or swells slightly, the water poured off and warm water (150 DEG F.) added. The cellulose solution and alum are added and the whole made up to a gallon. The composition is applied at a temperature of 70--106 DEG F.ALSO:Surfacing materials for decoration or building surfaces comprise cement and/or whiting and a solution containing gelatine or glue and a cellulose derivative, preferably with the addition of alum or similar hardening material.
