Abstract

Adhesives suitable for use with cellulosic materials are manufactured by intimately mixing zinc chloride, an alcohol and gelatin or a suitable gum or glue, preferably in aqueous solution. The preparation may be carried out by dissolving gelatin in water and adding, with stirring, a mixture of an alcohol, water and zinc chloride. By employing formaldehyde solution instead of water an insoluble adhesive is obtained. The proportion of alcohol may vary from a very small percentage to as much as 75 per cent, a suitable proportion being about 50 per cent. Examples describe mixtures in various proportions of gelatin, zinc chloride, ethyl alcohol and water. Gum arabic is specified as suitable for use with or in place of gelatin. Methyl alcohol is also specified as a suitable alcohol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the manufacture of adhesives by adding zinc chloride to a solution of gelatin, gum or glue without the addition of an alcohol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
