Abstract
432,412. Moulding wheel tyres. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI, 21, Via Fabio Filzi, Milan, Italy. Dec. 18, 1934, No. 36349. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1933. [Class 87 (ii)] Flat band carcases for tyre covers are shaped by sliding the band on to a closed rigid - ended flexible tube 1, the ends 2, 3 of which engage the edges of the band, moving the said ends relatively towards one another and simultaneously admitting fluid under pressure to inflate the tube, after which the tube is evacuated to collapse it, one end of the tube or a portion thereof is removed, and the shaped band is pulled off. The tube 1 is clamped to the ends 2, 3 by angle rings 5 which support the tyre band 7 and the whole is carried by a shaft 17, mounted in a frame 12, and connected to the end 2. The frame has two bosses 15, 20 in which are rotatably mounted a bearing block 16 and an extension 21 of the end 3, the two blocks being connected by a rigid tube 27. The shaft 17 is non-rotatably but slidably mounted in the bearing 16 by means of a key 19 and has a thread 28 engaging a nut 29 provided with handles 30. A stop 34 is provided on the end of the shaft. A bush 23, provided with packing 24 of rubber or oil-impregnated hemp forms an air seal for the shaft in the bearing 21. In operation the nut 29 is turned to cause the end 2 to approach the end 3 while fluid under pressure is admitted through the inlet 33 and the block 16 is held against rotation by a screw 31. When this screw is removed the tyre may be rotated for inspection. After the fluid has been evacuated the rim 10 of the end 2 is unscrewed and the tvre removed. The shaft 17 may also be actuated by fluid-operated means. The tube 1 is preferably formed with a somewhat greater diameter in the centre to obviate undue stretching and may be formed of rubber reinforced at the ends with fabric. The end 2 instead of having a detachable rim 10 may be removable bodily. The fluid pressure may also be admitted through a passage in the shaft 17.
