Abstract

432,379. Pulverulent-fuel furnaces. WHITEHOUSE, J. M., 13, Alexandra Road, and HADDAN, A. J. H., 11A, St. Andrew's Road, both in Bedford. March 24, 1934, No. 9330. [Class 51 (i)] Pulverulent fuel is fed upwardly from a hopper 13 through a conduit 12 by compressed air admitted thereto from a jacket 12a in the manner described in Specification 413,372, [Group XXX], the air-fuel mixture being deflected downwardly by a cap 8 on to an imperforate hearth 2 where combustion takes place. The cap 8 is supported on the upper end of the extension 5 of the conduit 12 by a ring 11 carrying spacing lugs 11<a>. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the hearth 2 is fixed and slag is removed therefrom by a rotary scraper 16 carried by a casting 18 which surrounds the hearth-supporting tube 4 and is rotated by worm gearing 19..22. The discharged slag is collected in a hopper 25 carried by a sleeve 26 surrounding the casting 18. Fig. 2 shows a modification provided with a rotary hearth 2 and fixed scraper 38, the hearth 2 and cap 8 being both cooled internally, the former by air supplied at 31 and delivered by pipe 39 to the fuel-conduit jacket 12<a>, and the latter by water supplied at 40 and withdrawn through pipes 41, 42. The hearth is rotated by a worm 36 engaging a worm-wheel 35 on the supporting tube 4. In a further construction having an air or water cooled rotary hearth and a fixed scraper, the cap 8 is solid and is vertically adjustable to vary the size of the annular outlet 7.
