Abstract

Urea is condensed with two or more (up to about 55) molecular proportions of ethylene oxide, and the products are acylated with an acid derived from a natural fat or fatty oil. The urea-ethylene oxide reaction may be promoted by a catalyst, which may be a substance having an alkaline reaction in aqueous solution, e.g. sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate or borax, or a surface active material, e.g. silica gel, diatomaceous earth, or a natural or synthetic zeolite. The acylation reaction may be effected with the free acids or their anhydrides or halides. The products are useful as textile assistants, particularly as wetting and emulsifying agents. In the examples, (1) urea is heated with 30 times its weight of ethylene oxide, and the product is heated with stearic acid; the acylated product so obtained may be added to an indigo vat, whereby slightly greener dyeings, much faster to rubbing, are obtained; the product may also be added to the baths used in dyeing with chrome blacks, whereby dyeings fast to rubbing are obtained; (2) urea is heated with 35 times its weight of ethylene oxide in the presence of caustic soda, and the product is heated with oleic acid; (3) as in example 2, except that ricinoleic acid is used instead of oleic acid; the product may be used as an emulsifying agent for mineral oils; (4) as in example 2, except that slightly less ethylene oxide is used, and the product is acylated with lauric acid. Palmitic acid or its anhydride or halides may also be used as acylating agents. The Provisional Specification states that the unacylated urea-ethylene oxide reaction products may be used as wetting and emulsifying agents.ALSO:Products useful as emulsifying-agents are obtained by condensing urea with two or more (up to about 55) molecular proportions of ethylene oxide, and acylating the products with an acid derived from a natural fat or fatty oil. In the examples: (1) urea is heated with 30 times its weight of ethylene oxide, and the product is heated with stearic acid; (2) urea is heated with 35 times its weight of ethylene oxide, and the product is heated with oleic acid; (3) as in example 2, except that ricinoleic acid is used instead of oleic acid; the product may be used as an emulsifying agent for mineral oils; (4) as in example 2, except that slightly less ethylene oxide is used, and the product is acylated with lauric acid. Palmitic acid or its anhydride or halides may also be used as acylating agents. The Provisional Specification states that the unacylated urea-ethylene oxide reaction products may be used as emulsifying agents.
