Abstract

Hydrocarbons having at least three condensed rings, except anthracene, acenaphthene, and perylene or oxy derivatives of said hydrocarbons are sulphurized to give dyestuffs by means of sulphur or agents yielding sulphur. In examples: (1) pyrene is heated with sulphur; the portion soluble in sodium sulphide dyes cotton brown tints while the insoluble dyestuff dyes vegetable fibres from a hydrosulphite vat a yellowish brown; the crude dyestuff may also be baked when violet brown to black shades may be obtained: (2) chrysene and fluoranthene are heated with sulphur and a little iodine: (3) oxyphenanthrene, made by fusing sulphonated phenanthrene with caustic alkali, is heated with a sodium polysulphide. Examples are also given of dyeing goods with the sulphur dyestuffs produced. The sulphurization of picene is mentioned. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the sulphurization of amino derivatives or salts of sulphoderivatives of the hydrocarbons containing at least three condensed rings, acetylamino pyrene being mentioned. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
