Abstract

431,473. Sewing shoes. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and BAGSHAW, C. M., Belgrave Road, Leicester. Jan. 6, 1934, No. 542. [Classes 17 (ii) and 112] The uppers and blocked soles of Sahara sandals are machine stitched to simulate hand lacing by placing chain stitches in staggered prepared holes. The invention is carried out by the aid of a Blake chain-stitching machine such as described in Specification 21786/02, [Class 112]. The sole is shaped and the holes are punched by a machine such as described in Specification 391,873, [Group VIII], and the clutch mechanism for starting and stopping is as described in Specification 720C/07, [Class 43]. The operator begins by sewing together the heel portions 5 to the sole 1. The parts are placed in register over the horn 69 of the machine, the plane of the sole being approximately vertical and the horn tip contacting the marginal portion 3. Upper holes 11 and sole margin holes 13 are placed successively beneath the needle 21 by the operator, who has both hands free for this purpose, to produce the enchained stitches 15. The needle and presser foot 27 are stopped in the raised positions after the formation of each stitch to enable the operator to move the work. A spring plunger 61 is provided to move the needle slightly downwards after reaching its highest point to facilitate the production of the next stitch. An additional thread finger 35 is provided to prevent the needle from losing the thread from its barb when stopped in the raised position. Where the gap between the heel part 5 and the vamp parts 7, 9 occur, the needle is caused alternately to pass into a perforation 13 and just clear of the margin, to form the ornamental stitch 17.
