Abstract
393,649. Chain stitching. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., RICKS, F., and ALLCOCK, H. B., Union Works, Belgrave Road, Leicester. Dec. 11, 1931, No. 34353. [Class 112.] In stitching together the welt, upper, and insole of boots, means are provided for varying the amount of thread pulled off so that stitches of even setting are produced along the edges and round the toe. The invention is illustrated as embodied in the welt sewing machine of Specification 13873/10, [Class 112, Sewing &c.], with the continuous feed mechanism of Specification 115,235, [Class 112, Sewing &c.], and thread fingers of Specification 393,643. The thread finger 5 is swung about its pivot 6 by a link 7 connected by universal joints to the finger and a cam-operated lever 8. The link 7 is also connected to a knee or treadle-controlled mechanism by which the end of 9 of the link is moved along a slot 10 in the lever 8 towards the pivot 11. The treadle mechanism has associated with it a counting device which, after a predetermined number of stitches have been formed, e.g. round the toe of the shoe, automatically returns the end of the link towards the outer end of the slot 10. The cam lever 8 has a constant throw so that movement of the end of the link 7 towards the pivot of the lever 8 reduces the throw of the thread finger 5 and therefore reduces the amount of thread drawn by the thread finger. The operator therefore operates the treadle when the toe is reached. When a predetermined number of stitches have been made, the link is returned to the end of the slot for sewing along the other side of the shoe. The position of a pin 33 on the ratchet lever of the counting mechanism in the series of holes in the lever 28 determines the number of stitches made with the reduced amount of thread pulled by the finger 5.
