Abstract
Fibrous bedding-material for poultry and animals is prepared by drying bagasse at a temperature of from 250 DEG to 400 DEG F., to sterilize it, and render it easily disintegrable, mechanically disintegrating the dried bagasse and then removing the liberated pith, dust and fine fibres to produce a dry, loose absorbent mass having an average fibre length of not less than about one inch. The disintegration is preferably carried out in a hammer mill or in a picking or teasing machine and the product screened to remove dust, &c., and to grade the fibres. For poultry the most suitable fibre length is 1 to 3 inches. For animals, 1 to 4 inches. In use eucalyptus may be added to the bedding-material.
