Abstract

431,264. Spring supports for handlebars and saddles. PARTRIDGE, J., 61, Kenninghall Road, Clapton, London. Jan. 1, 1934, No. 35131/33. [Class 136 (iii)] In a resilient mounting for the handle-bars and saddles of cycles, the part supported is fixedly mounted at one end of a bifurcated lever, or a pair of levers, pivoted to a pillar forming part of or mounted upon the cycle frame, and one or more springs are interposed between a supporting element upon the pillar and the bifurcated lever or pair of levers at the other end or at a position remote from the part supported, in such a way that the controlling force exerted by the springs is applied symmetrically to the lever at both sides of the pillar. In the form of handle-bar mounting shown in Fig. 1, the stem a is provided at its upper end with a fitting b having a transverse boss formed with apertures into which are screwed pivot pins e, on which are mounted the forked arms c<1> of a bell-crank lever c, c<3> provided with a clamp c<2> for the handle-bar d. The short parallel arms c<3> of the bell-crank lever are pivoted at f to a stirrup f fitted with a compression spring h, which abuts against a projection a<1> on the stem a and is adapted to be adjusted by means of a screwed rod g and nut g<1>. The inclination of the lever c is adjusted by means of a curved plate i, Fig. 4, fitting against the transverse boss of the member b and having projections i<1> engaging arcuate recesses c<4> in the edges of the pivotal portions of the arms c<1>. The plate is slotted at i<2> for the passage of studs i<3> which screw into the transverse boss. In modifications, the arms c<3> of the bell-crank lever are connected to two helical tension springs, or to a single helical tension spring looped around a stirrup, which is adjustably mounted on a screw-threaded rod projecting forwards from the projection a<1> on the stem.
