Abstract

431,009. Charging batteries. MORRISON & SONS, Ltd., A. E., MORRISON, A. E., and MORRISON, A. C., Gartree Street, Leicester. March 6, 1934, No. 7115. [Class 38 (iv)] In a system for charging two or more 'batteries in series from the mains, each battery when charged is automatically cut out and replaced by a resistance, the main supply switch being opened when all the batteries are charged. Fig. 2 shows three batteries 27, 28, 29 on charge from the mains 7, each battery being connected at a charging point 56, 57, 58 together with its associated meter 50, 51, 52 by which the charging current is switched off when the battery is fully charged. When any battery, for example battery 27, is plugged in and switch 8 is closed by hand, a circuit is completed which includes lead 14 and winding 4 by which switch 1 is operated. This closes a connection from the main to the + pole of the plug 56 through a regulating resistance 43, switch 1 and lead 34. The - pole of the plug is connected by lead 37 to the control group for the next battery 28. Switch 1 also closes contacts 17 by which winding 23<a> of the main supply switch 23b is energized. When the battery 27 is fully charged, the meter 50 closes switch 53 whereby current is supplied to coil 11 thus opening switch 8. This breaks the circuit through . coil 4 of switch 1 which breaks the connection between the main and the + pole of the battery and instead passes current through the resistance 24 to the remaining batteries on charge. The main switch 23b is energized by any one of the contacts 17, 18, 19 in the control groups, these contacts being in parallel circuits, so that the switch remains closed until the last contact is opened. The automatic cut-out switches 8, 9, 10 and the contact devices 53, 54, 55 may be replaced by meter switches which are closed except when the batteries are charged, the batteries in this case energizing closing coils of switches 1, 2, 3. When any battery is charged, its meter switch opens and releases the corresponding switch 1, 2 or 3 thus making connection with the appropriate byepass resistance 24, 25, 26.
