[Class 146 (iii)] [See also Group XXV] A pencil-lead or like holder comprises a central tubular portion adapted to receive the lead or the like, and flat side portions of appreciably less thickness than the tubular portion, and having feeding means for the lead &c., disposed within the tubular portion, the holder being so thin that it can be closed up in an ordinary book without damaging or appreciably bending the back of the book. The holder 10 is formed of flat sheet metal, celluloid, &c., which is bent to the form shown in Figs. 1 and 5, where the space 13 houses the lead-propelling mechanism and the spaces 14 contain spare leads. The lead is propelled by a screw-threaded and slidable but non-rotatable pusher rod, by rotating a nut 16 carried by the rod and projecting through slots formed in both sides of the holder. The point end of the holder is tapered to form yielding spring points on each side of the lead, which close together when a lead is not present, and serve to hold the lead firmly in projected position. A cap 18 shaped to correspond with the exterior of the casing, and made by doubling up a sheet of the same material as the holder 10, holds an eraser 20. One or both of the spare lead receptacles may be omitted, and in the latter case the container has flat sides projecting from the centre space 13. One or two clips for holding the pencil in a pocket &c. may be attached to the exterior of the casing, and when two clips are furnished both of these are situated on one side of the casing and in the spaces between the tubular portions 13, 14. The lead, which may he of round or other section, may be replaced by a needle or a blackhead remover.
